Fried Green Tomatoes
In the novel Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Café, by Fannie Flag, there is a major transition in the character of Evelyn Couch. Evelyn begins as a passive and unassertive, middle-aged woman. Her husband, Ed, sits in front of the television while she does whatever he wants. She cleans the house and has dinner ready for him every night when he gets home from work. Evelyn seems to have no self-esteem and has lost focus on her life. Only when she meets a new friend, does her life begin to change for the better. Ninny Threadgoode lives in the same nursing home as Evelyn’s mother-in-law, whom she is forced to visit every week. It is not long before Evelyn begins to look forward to Ninny’s storytelling.
