Concept A: The Australian Aborigines 1. The ancestors shaped the landscape of the earth and created the various forms of life, including the first human beings. They specified the territory each human tribe was to occupy and decided on languages, social rules and customs for each of them. 2. The aborigines believe that the spiritual essence of the ancestors lives on in the symbols they left behind. 3. A totem is an object or thing in nature, often an animal, assumed as a token or emblem of a clan, tribe, family or related group. 4. Ritual is essential for life to have meaning because it is only through ritual that the sacred power of the Dreaming can be accessed and experienced. They believe that the rituals themselves were taught to the first humans by the ancestors in the Dreaming. 5. Every ritual lies in a myth that tells certain actions of the ancestors during the Dreaming. 6. Since the Aborigine society is very structured certain people are not permitted to partake in certain rituals. Taboo dictates that certain activities are ser aside for specific members of the group and are forbidden to others. Violation of taboo can be punishable by death. 7. These initiation rituals are used to awaken the spirit within young people, and at the same time redefine their stature in society. They bring about the symbolic death of childhood and prepares for the spiritual rebirth that is necessary for the journey towards adulthood.
