25 killed after bomb explodes in Pakistan . ... Santa Barbara News Press, January 19, 1997
LAHORE, Pakistan - A powerful bomb exploded Saturday outside a courthouse where leaders of a militant Sunni Muslim group were on trial. ... Recall the backpack bomb exploding during the Olympics in Atlanta, or the mail bombs sent to unsuspecting victims by the Unibomber. ...
The threat of undetected explosives has many dimensions:
Acts of Terror
Car Bombs
Letter Bombs
Luggage Bombs
Coercion and Extortion
Hijacking
Extortion for Ransom
Unexploded Ordnance
Land Mines
Buried "Duds" (Bombs, Artillery Shells)
The methods we have to detect hidden explosives are varied but not effective enough:
Physical Search
Xray
Nuclear
Electromagnetic
Trace Detection
Tagging
Major problems exist with all these methods:
Failure to detect (false negative indication)
High false alarm rate (false positive indication)
Saturation or fatigue (cannot detect reliably over long periods)
Expensive
One promising new approach is to better understand our most reliable detection method, trained detection dogs, and find a way to do the same thing with electronic technology.
