book review of soul by soul
The book that I chose to do for this book review is Walter Johnson’s Soul by Soul: Life inside the Antebellum Slave Market. ... The book traces the history of slave trade in the U. ... In certain parts of the book he uses a narratives from the point of view of the slave, slave trader, and slave owners. Johnson structures the book chronologically starting with the sale of slaves in New Orleans. ... It is very clear that Johnson has a bias in this book against slave traders by his points of view. ... 207) In general I felt that this was a good book. ... One way that I feel that this book may have been a little bias is the fact that Johnson almost made it seem as if no slave owner was satisfied with his slaves work for a long period of time. There were of course cases where slaves would be in a family for generations and their treatment was not as bad as most, but the majority of the book speaks of the worst outcomes. All of that aside I do feel that it was a good book and Johnson did portray slave trade in the antebellum period from all perspectives in a well written manner.
