Differences in opinion of the content of a strategy and processes of developing a strategy
Differences in opinion of the content of a strategy and processes of developing a strategy are commonly argued. ... They usually matter when we realise that strategy needs to be approached from a range of perspectives and rather than take on a single view leaving all the others clever strategies need to achieve a balance between seemingly divergent views. The purpose of this essay is to evaluate and explain Peter J Brews’s concept of one view in particular the Star Trek strategy. Throughout the article it explains that strategic plans often contain generic or motherhood and apple pie statements accompanied by outcome based “stretch” goals that aren’t strategy but measures to determine whether or not good strategy has been implemented. It underscores how strategy should be evaluated: as a work of creative fiction sending firms boldly to go where none have gone before. I shall begin by defining the key concepts brought forward from this article and comparing them to other approaches to strategy such as, strategy as formal planning, strategy as learning and strategy as SWOT. I will then go on to further discuss whether the star Trek strategy is a feasible concept or an outlandish theory impossible to accomplish as a perfect strategy. When talked of, strategy is fundamentally associated with planning such as the way that goals or objectives are set and then developing ways in which to target those goals. For example a business strategy is much like a game of football, where much time is spent on the planning and fine tuning of the team, players are resources, therefore careful decisions need to be made on how these resources are to be divided. I will discuss this further when I look in to strategy as leverage, where there is an interesting comment on available resources and innovation.
