The character of Richard in many ways is closely linked with the historical figure of king Richard III, but in order for Shakespeare to capture the audience’s imagination he sometimes exaggerated the truth and made minor details into major ones. By doing this some might say that Shakespeare created one of the greatest villains of all time. A prime example of when Shakespeare presents Richard in an undesirable Light is the way that we learn Richard has a deformity of a withered arm and a hunchback that leaves him with a limp. ‘Deformed, unfinished, sent before my time…’ This is a dramatic change from history because we know that Richards’s deformity was very slight and not really noticeable to the eye.
