SOUKDAVAH SYOUTHOUM Journal IV Attending Monroe Community College (MCC) has taught me in many things. For instance, I realized the value of nationalism, patriotism, competition, and individualism. The experiences made me understand more of being human; what I am, and to be proud of myself. Since, I attended this school, I have seen many people from other countries, especially in my ESL class. Some are from the Philippines, Korea, China, Vietnam, Africa, Germany, etc. The first conversation of this class, we introduced ourselves where we came from, how long we have been in the U.S, things like this. These simple questions showed me the value of nationalism; we present ourselves by where we came from. I realized everyone is just as proud as me of their homeland. The conversation presented me to the society and the environment where I live. Also, getting involved with the society or in the community gave me the passion that inspires me to serve the community. I enjoyed doing and helping something for other people in this country, which made me see that I am useful in here. This make me feel patriotic. In another way, playing sports and entering some contests (math contest, writing contest…etc) in which I have to do my best, to win the competitions and get an award which made me learn about the value of competition.
