Reefer Madness The Underground black market Economy is thriving right under our noses in every form of the underground economy. America’s underground economy is booming and we are helping it in one way or the other. In Reefer Madness, the author Eric Schlosser talks about three different parts of America’s underground economy porn, marijuana, and the illegal migrant worker. We help this economy thrive in different forms, be it marijuana smoking, buying porn or a carton of strawberries from the grocery, everyday we are influenced by America’s black market. Is Marijuana really as bad as the Government is making it seem? Well in Reefer Madness that answer is definitely yes because of the harsh penalties state governments are giving out because of minor marijuana offenses. The state governments have giving first time marijuana offenders the same punishment as a convicted rapist or worst. These laws are unjust and need to be changed so most of the people convicted under marijuana offenses can be returned to society. These laws has ruined many people’s lives especially minorities who aren’t able to afford good legal coverage to argue their case and so they rot away in prison some with no chances of ever seeing the light of a day all because of the harsh marijuana laws that govern our states, and the harmless mistake(s) they made. For hundreds of years marijuana has been around and used resourcefully in the home for uses such as rope and clothing (the hemp). In Virginia the government made it mandatory that the plant be grown in the home. When the Mexicans started migrating to the U.S. around the early 1900s prompted prejudices and fears from the government and also their means of intoxication, marijuana.
