Magnetic Fields: A Brief
Introduction
By: Elizabeth Munguia
Magnetic Fields
Magnetic fields are all around us in our everyday life. The Earth itself has a magnetic field that either causes many interesting sites such as the Aurora Borealis or it is being used to decide the four cardinal directions. Magnetic fields are used in all sorts of devices that depend on an electric current for proper function. Devices such as electric motors, television sets, computer screens, and tape recorders all use the magnetic effects brought about by an electric current. Magnetic fields are much apart of the world as the humans that watch the borealis near the north and south poles. In this topic of discussion, magnets will first be introduced, then forces caused by magnetic fields. These topics all have something to do with magnetic fields and are therefore related to the main topic. ...
Magnetic fields are also around permanent magnets too. ... Although both of these forces are evident, they are often described, or rather compared to the long-range electric and gravitational forces and the electric and gravitational fields, it is known that magnetic forces are described by the magnetic fields that surround them. Often with magnetic fields, the questions arise about it’s strength or the actual visualization of the field itself. Magnetic field lines, created be iron fillings in experiments, answer both of those questions, The direction of the field lines are determined by where the north pole of a compass points. ... Although iron is used to determine what a field looks like, it has also been known to tell the direction of Earth’s magnetic field. ... This determines the age of the rock as well as the direction of the Earth’s magnetic poles. ... However they know not how the fields change or the origin of the magnetic field itself.
