Spike Lee’s Do the Right Thing is a picture of an American community torn apart by hate. Throughout the film Spike Lee is trying to get the message across that the film is not about black and white but about love versus hate. The film is set in Brooklyn and depicts an America that will never come right until the hatred that is embedded in its citizens is transformed into love.
Lee sets up a system of opposites with black and white, love and hate, harmony and violence, man and woman and then sets them against each other. ...
The film’s home base is Sal’s Pizzeria, a pizza place owned by Sal and his two sons, Pino and Vito. ... Sal has remained in this neighbourhood as its ethnic balance shifted because of love for his pizzeria and his neighbourhood, having also built a good relationship with his black customers. Vito on the other hand is filled with hatred for the business and the black community, especially Mookie. The irony being that his favourite sportsman, movie star and singer are all black, but he is too blinded by his own bigotry, claiming that they are more than black.
