4/13/2004 Divine Happiness Divine Happiness is a story about a Chinese American girl named Jade. Jade is living in an ethnic enclave of Chinese people in the United States, and trying to assimilate into American culture the best that she can. Her family sees what she is doing and disapproves of her activities and the people that she chooses to date. They hold her back the best that they can and try to make sure she holds onto her ethnic Chinese roots. The movie is about the struggles she and other family members have to keep their pride yet still live their life the way that they would like to. Jade is struggling against her family to be herself. The things that are most important to her and the things that she likes to do best are of no interest to her parents. She wants to be an actress and is doing fairly well at it but her parents are not supportive of this type of work and would prefer it if their daughter were doing more domestic labor. This is evident by their reactions when she loses a job; they are pleased that she can focus on something else. One night she goes out dancing with two of her friends but the bouncer will not let her in which is obviously discrimination.
