DBQ: Problems of farmers in the late nineteenth century                    

     Big businesses run by “Robber Barons” consumed much of the wealth in America and aided in an enormous industrial boom during the late nineteenth century. While big businesses increased, problems brewed for the agrarian community. Farmers, due to their concentration on growing a single crop, were intimately tied to banking, railroading, and manufacturing. These ties began to put farmers in a state of decline. ... Complaints that consisted of deflation, unfavorable banking relationships, poor unfavorable railroad conduct and marketing systems were all legitimate, while the poor organization of the farmers was a problem that arose and could have been solved but was not.
     Deflation swept through America in the late nineteenth century causing farmers discontent. ... The farmers proposed a silver base to replace the gold base which would allow for increased money circulation. ... Farmers depended on their products as their only income and way of life. ... Deflation construed more problems that did not end with the decrease in the price of the farmers products. ... Farmers had started their farming career with loans while the economy was stable, but their whole career path was altered by deflation. The effects of deflation also made farmers change their production and business practices in order for them to squeeze out any extra money to increase their profit. If the farmers plan for a silver based dollar the inflation allowed would have aided in the farmers rebound from debt, but the plan was not implemented. ...
     Many farmers during the late nineteenth century caused banks to foreclose due to their lack of income and unpaid loans to the banks. Banks loaned money to farmers to allow them to acquire the necessary materials and tools to start their production.
