They have also mixed it into food and drinks. Marijuana causes changes in the way people feel, much like the effects of alcohol. In the United States, marijuana is considered an illegal drug and there are laws that prohibit the use, sale or possession of it. Marijuana has many nicknames such as “dope”, “reefer”, “grass”, “weed”, “mary jane,” “pot”, “bhang”, “green”, “herb”, “ganja”, “sinsemilla”, “chronic”, “bud”, “dozier” and many more. Marijuana has many of the same side effects as alcohol, and thus should be treated as one. The effects of the use of marijuana are varied. It may make one person feel relaxed and free from worried while in others it may cause depression, paranoia, and in many cases hunger. A person’s reaction to marijuana depends on many things such as his mood when he takes the drug. If a person using the drug is in a secure setting and among friends, he may experience a pleasant feeling. Marijuana can also cause a person to lose his sense of time and place. Minutes may seem like hours and objects that are near may be far away. The drug may reduce memory and coordination, much like alcohol. Some people believe the drug to improve their ability to study or work. Scientists have found no proof to these beliefs. Marijuana may increase a person’s willingness to accept new ideas and as a result, some users believe the drug gives them a new understanding of life. Regular use of marijuana does not cause an addiction, which can result from the use of alcohol and research shows that its use does not harm the body. The Chinese ancestors first used marijuana as early as 2400 B.C for pleasure as well as a medication. Today, the drug is used in most parts of the world. It is reported that Americans first began using marijuana in the 1920’s.
