Literature and Life: Licentiousness and Lewd or Licit, Laughable, and Laudable? They, the eternal yet intangible creators of axioms, witticisms, and wisdom say that prostitution is the world’s oldest occupation. Today they continue to say that sex sells or sex brings big business. One might also say, “They speak the truth, ” as evidenced by various readings covered in the Introduction to Literature course this semester. In Lysistrata by Aristophanes, “The Ring that Controlled Erections” of the Four Fabliaux, and “Clear, fresh, sweet waters” by Petrarch, readers may see how sex works as a form of entertainment, a conversation piece, a motivator of humankind, and a comedic topic. Ironically, they also say that there is nothing new under the sun. If this cliché holds any verity then why do multiple governments, civic authorities, and organizations of power continue to wish to extinguish sexual desire? Only last week a guest on Bill O’Reilly’s episodic display of tirades, or The O’Reilly Factor alleged that Planned Parenthood, (a nationwide organization that offers sexual health courses, birth control, and supports women’s freedom of reproductive choice) instructs its clients with pornographic information.
