Chris McCandless, biographed by Jon Krakauer in Into the Wild, was a youthful man who wanted to run away from all his problems. Into the Wild is a true story about a young man who was lost in a world that he could not understand. McCandless left the world that he felt separated from and spent the last years of his life on many journeys that tested his physical and mental boundaries. Chris McCandless’ arrogance toward receiving help from others, and his hatred against society caused him to set out into the wild. ... Although many people believe Chris’ death was an unfortunate tragedy that was caused by his confused heart and soul, I believe Chris’ arrogance and belief in self-rule directly lead to his lonely-death. ...
McCandless grew up in Annandale, Virgina and was raised in a prosperous and well-educated atmosphere. ... While his high-school friends were trying to sneak into Georgetown bars, Chris was chatting with prostitutes and homeless people. ... McCandless was also very arrogant. ... Chris was recognized for talents like athletics, academics, and music but he excelled in anything he put his mind into. McCandless was not the average child of your local public school. When Chris was twelve he had climbed 13,000-feet of the highest peak in the Rocky Mountains. At age ten, Chris entered a ten-kilometer road-race in which he finished sixty-ninth, beating more than one thousand adults (111).
