Jasmine Griffith 4/15/04 Great Gatsby Essay Life is a rollercoaster of ups and downs. Throughout life we experience happiness, sadness, hate, death, and love. Gatsby lives a lives life to its very fullest, yet Nick stays put and holds off. ”He who risks nothing, has nothing, does nothing, and is nothing.”(UNKNOWN) Gatsby risks his life for love and happiness. Fitzgerald uses Gatsby’s past to shape the story. Gatsby was a robber baron who became wealthy through exploitation. Anger is what fueled Gatsby and his wealth and power were his means of attaining his goals towards happiness and true love. Gatsby supports this when he says to Tom, "she only married you because I was too poor and she was tired of waiting for me." (137) Gatsby has never forgotten that if he had had the money when he first met her, then she would be his.
