It has been the nature of human beings to interpret omens the way they want to and automatically assume that they are correct. Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare is no exception and omens were misinterpreted on numerous occasions leading to misfortunes and the downfall for the characters in the play. The major theme in the play is people should take time and think carefully when interpreting omens because the way they interpret them can lead to serious and grave consequences. The ability to read omens for what they are and not assume events to mean more then they do, is the key to survival, and Cassius and other characters were forced to learn the hard way. Caesars assassination was the core of the whole play, and his assassination was caused by yet more misinterpretations by the characters. The night preceding Caesars’ appearance at the senate is full of omens that can be read in many ways, but no one reads them accurately. Cassius takes the violent storm to signify the danger that will occur if Caesar is ruler. These omens, if anything, actually warn of the destruction that Cassius himself threatens.
