High African American Incarceration
Since 1980 the number of blacks incarcerated has tripled. The African American crime rate has not gone up three time as high. The number of blacks in prison is clearly high and disproportionate to the black population as a whole in the United States. Based the article by Gary Kleck “Racial discrimination in criminal sentencing”, and in class discussions there are several explanations for this trend of high black incarceration rates. ... Blacks were affected greatly by the “War on Drugs” because there are a large number of Black people in this country that live in inner-city ghetto’s that harbor high levels of street crime. ... Clearly, the country’s war on drugs resulted in a large number of African Americans going to prison. Imbedded in the system are racial prejudices that culminate in a disproportionate incarceration rate.
The second reason for blacks high incarceration rate is there seems to be differential involvement and differential selection of African in crime. ... The break down of the family community and social role models in impoverished areas, where there are high concentration of minority members, there will be higher rates of crime. Differential selection is also responsible for high black incarceration rates.
