Kenneth Burke’s theory of dramatism, in its simplicity, attempts to analyze everyday actions and conversations. He believed that every day life is a drama. The way we interact with each other is motivated by what actions or results we want to occur. Also, another important aspect of his theory involves guilt. We as humans do not like to feel guilty and must find a way of ridding ourselves of responsibility. Using his “pentab” you can analyze a motive. The Pentab includes the following: act, scene, agent, agency, and purpose. The “act” basically describes what is done or is being done. The “scene” is when or where it is done. The “agent” is who did the action. The “purpose” is why something was done. Every act or behavior is motivated by one of the pentads or a combination of them. Dramatism can be seen and evaluated in everyday life. It can be applied to any situation no matter how big or small. The agent must try to identify himself with their audience. He must try to make his case acceptable. He must rid himself of his guilt. Example 1 My best friend Carlos is financially irresponsible. He asked if I could pay his phone bill using my credit card. This way he would not have to drive into town to pay it at the mall (keep in mind the Mall is 45 miles away). I did not want to do this because I feel that he will take advantage of the situation or make it routine. Also, I feared that they would have my credit card on file and any time he did not pay his bill they would charge to my account. He is the type of person that would find nothing wrong with authorizing the payment. All these situations ran through my head. I was filled with anxiety and was very apprehensive about letting him borrow it. I had to come up with something and quick. I could not tell him the truth because then he would make me feel bad and use it to manipulate me. My first thought was to tell him that my card was over the limit and that even if he gave me the money right away it would probably not work because any money used toward the payment would just go to over the limit fees.
