In the 1920s, there was much tension between new and changing attitudes on one hand and traditional values and nostalgia on the other. Urabanization continued to spread, given an extra boost with the further advance of technology. Many began to depart from the original Christian mindset and developed an increasingly lax outlook on their relgion due to the affects of science. Women independence grew as they detached themselves from the security of marriage and impacted society. As American culture became newer and more modernized, a rift was created between those holding onto their past conservative lifestyle and those diving headfirst into a pool of liberal, modern ideas. After World War I, cities grew within a decade of great technological development. People could move from city to city with the car as the newest transportation device. Connecting many of these cities was made possible with the construction of large steel bridges.
