Neil Young's movie "The Crying Game" is a step back from the main-stream culture's "ideal" movie. It has an artistic aspect not found in most popular movies. The movie may even become a cult classic with the sub-culture that includes homosexual activists. In my opinion, if that happens, these people will be completely misinterpreting the message of the movie. The movie conveys a message that, in actuality, has very little to do with homosexuality and it takes a mature viewer to see this level. To better understand this analysis, one must first know the basic plot of the movie. I warn you now, though, if you ever plan to see "The Crying Game," watch it before you read this paper. A plot summary ruins the excitement of the movie. The movie begins at a carnival with Jody, a British soldier (played by Forest Whitaker), Impressing his blonde "pickup" Jude (played by Miranda Richardson) with a stuffed teddy bear he had just won. The situation evolves into the two of them making out on the bank of a nearby river. Just then, a third person whom we later find out is Fergus (played by Stephen Rea) appears holding gun to the head of the British soldier. As it turns out, both Jude and Fergus are members of the IRA and are kidnapping Jody to hold hostage until the British army releases a member of the IRA that they are holding captive. The plan is to give the British army three days to release their prisoner after which, Jody would be killed. Fergus was appointed as Jody's gaurd and during their time together, they befriend each other. In their discussions, Jody told Fergus of his girlfriend in London, and asked him that after his death, he look her up and tell her that he was thinking of her when he died. The next morning Fergus was ordered to kill Jody. Of course, after befriending him, Fergus found this hard to do. He lead Jody into the forest with the intent of shooting him. Once they were in the forest, Jody began to run and Fergus, not having the heart to shoot him in the back, ran after him.
