Deutschland ein Wintermachen (Germany; a Winters Tale)
George Grosz 1917-1919
The title taken from the 1844 poem of Hermann Heine, which was a savage portrayal of Germany at the time, establishes immediately the tone of this painting. ...
George Grosz recorded this time in his paintings, in my opinion giving us an insight into the anger and frustrations felt by the people of the age. ... Germany at the time was politically leaning to the right and for Grosz, whose political leanings were more to left, with the soviets, it was a time of great frustration. The class system, which at the time dominated every aspect of German life, was corrupt and became Grosz’s inspiration for Germany a Winters Tale. ... What Grosz would call the “Pillars of Society”. ... Maybe Grosz’s way of illustrating that he is blind to the suffering of his society. ...
These men represent those in control, those who, in my own and I’m sure Grosz’s view, stuffed their faces and lived in comfort unknown to other parts of society. ... However, the same cannot be said of those three men who personify control, there is no excuse in Grosz’s view for their position, for their lack of compassion for the lower class.
