Francis Macomber is ‘accidentally’ killed by his wife when she tries to save him from being attacked by a buffalo, or so this is what everyone thinks. However Francis’ wife, Margot is very controlling in their relationship, and when Francis begins to show that he is no longer afraid of her, Margot kills him so that she can stay in control. ... The relationship between Francis and his wife Margot is not like any other relationship. ... Their relationship is held together by wealth and beauty, which is summarized in the statement “Margot was too beautiful for Macomber to divorce her and Macomber had too much money for Margot ever to leave him” (Hemingway 487). ... During the first encounter of hunting, Francis is very scared of the lion. When Wilson asks Francis to go in after the lion, Francis says “I’d like to, I’m just scared, you know” (485). Macomber did end up going into the forest after the lion, but as the narrator states about Francis after he went in, “The next thing he knew he was running; running wildly, in panic in the open, running toward the stream” (486).
