Although I did not like A Canticle for Leibowitz I definitely feel it is one of those works that needs to be read. It shows people how history has been repeating itself for some time now, and how nothing truly has changed. Miller takes the reader through several different centuries of time to show the effects of what humanity has done to itself. The novel takes place in the future, to act as a means of mapping out history and its repetition. Miller’s book shows the history of the human race and how even with prior knowledge of events happening they will still occur once again. The book starts off with Francis Gerard finding a fallout shelter which was a place where the older monks and book memorizers stayed to seek shelter. They are in the future and a great nuclear war has just taken place across the globe. These weapons have killed billions of people and there are many mutants wandering the earth, that they have to be aware of. This part of the book is called Fiat Homo, meaning let there be man, which is a good title considering the few survivors that are trying to teach others about the past. The problem with these teachings are that most people believe that these teachings are what caused the nuclear holocaust in the first place, because that is all they know. They were all so scared that it would take place again so they decided to burn all books and knowledge of the past. It is very interesting that history teachers tell their students that they need to learn about past situations so that they do not happen again, because history ultimately repeats itself somewhere down the road; we are just postponing the inevitable.
