The Texas Revolution
From the 1720s, the Spanish had claimed all of what is now Texas, but only about 4,000 Spanish settlers lived there by the 1820s. In 1821, Mexico gained its independence from Spain and wanted to make Texas its northern province. Eager to attract settlers there, the Mexican government granted permission to Moses Austin and 300 other American settlers to stat a colony in Texas. Under Moses’s son Stephen, the colony was founded in 1821, and thus began a mass movement of American settlers into Texas.
