Islamic music constantly changes in pitch, mode, rhythm and tempo. These changes show little relationship to the story or mood of the text. Instead performers manipulate musical elements to show the musical divisions. They could use harmony to convey the mood or story but instead performers concentrated on the tonal and rhythmic complications of a single line (Microsoft, 2001). Islamic music does not contain long, unified melodies. It consists of joining together short melodic and rhythmic lines. These short lines are played in variation to keep the listener interested as the rhythmic lines are repeated over and over. Repetition of a line can show the importance of the line, tone, or section. The reading of the Koran is performed as a solo and the musical talents of the reading and the expressionness of his voice define the musical structure. The adhan or call to prayer was the summoning of the faithfuls to their religious duties. At first it was a single announcement in the street but developed into a call from atop the minaret (Wellesz, p.440).
