Sex and Violence in the Media
Is There Too Much Sex and Violence in the Media? Recently while watching TV I came across the Howard Stern show, where there were girls stripping and offering sex to the winner of a contest. This made me begin to think whether or not there is too much sex and violence in the media. ... The authors that claim that there is a connection between sex and violence in the media, with the behavior of children are Jay Nordlinger, Jeff Jacoby, Evan Gahr, and Irving Kristol. In his editorial, “’Bang’: Guns, Rap, and Silence,” Jay Nordlinger, claims that rap music may cause kids to be more involved with violence. ... In his essay, “A Desensitized Society Drenched in Sleaze,” columnist for the Boston Globe Jeff Jacoby claims that because of all the sex and violence we see everyday that we become immune to it, and it doesn’t bother us anymore. He supports this through the use of rhetorical arguments, statistics, and examples suggesting that sex and violence become normal to us because we are exposed to so much of it. ... It might not affect some as much as others, but the media can definitely desensitize us and cause some to not even think that killing someone is wrong. ... He supports this through the use of rhetorical arguments suggesting that violence is all around us and it is time to do something about it.
