Super Bowl Advertising Analysis

Every day, the average American is subjected to over 1500 advertisements. (Lin, pg.1) These advertisements are intended to entice you to purchase or consume their product. But did you ever stop to think about how they might do this? Employing sex to sell a product has become the latest trend in advertising. There are many ways advertisement agencies use sex to get consumers interested in their product. One way to entice consumers is to use attractive celebrities to promote their product. People look up to celebrities and want to be like them as much as possible. Pizza hut took this idea and ran with it. They hired Jessica Simpson, a multi-platinum pop star who also has her own hit show, Newlyweds. In this 30 second ad that cost Pizza Hut 2.3 million dollars, they clearly stated the problem of having to satisfy a family who has all different wants. ( An average year for super bowl commercials, pg.1)As the Muppets argue over toppings, Jessica enters and explains how they can all get what they want by ordering the new 4forall pizza. Jessica tells Kermit the frog that she ordered green peppers just for him. Then everything goes into slow motion with Jessica’s hair blowing, the music playing, and she blows Kermit a kiss. In this ad, the celebrity uses her sex appeal to persuade viewers to go out and consume this new product. The advertisement also uses many other techniques to relay the message that there is a strong driving electrical impulse between Kermit and Jessica.
