The changes in The Necklace

In “the Necklace” it is easy to tell right at the beginning that Mathilda was a very self centered materialistic woman. You see this as early as the second paragraph When Roberts states “ She was a simple person , without money to dress well, but she was unhappy as if she had gone through bankruptcy” (4). Mathilda was born into an unhealthy family but always believed that she was intended for much more than her mediocre life. She was also very depressed by this fact. Roberts notes “ She was one of those pretty and charming women, but as if by an error of destiny, into a family or clerks and copyists.
