Water is essential to life, and without it life would probably not exist on earth. Water is a major component of living things, typically forming between 70 and 95% of the mass of the cell and approximately 80% of body mass (in humans). In some organisms like jellyfish it can be up to 96% of overall body mass. Water is not just important to our bodies but also the environment we live in, from fish in the sea to being an important substance in most reactions.
Water is made up of 3 atoms; two hydrogen’s and one oxygen joined by covalent bonds. ... In water however, oxygen having a large number of protons and hydrogen having few, this means that the shared electrons are more attracted to the greater + of the oxygen than the hydrogen’s weak attraction. ... This slight charge means that when water molecules are close together the positively charged hydrogen atoms are attracted to the negatively charged oxygen atoms of another water molecule to form hydrogen bonds. The bonds are weak individually but the large number of them means that the total force keeping the molecules together is considerable, giving water a cohesive property.
