Is the Freedom Free? In the American society we believe in the freedom of choice in what we wear or do, but in reality this is a misconception. As Thoreau once said, “We do not ride the railroad; it rides upon us.” The truth is: the media, commercial enterprises, and the government manipulate our lives. American consumers fiercely protect their independence, yet the big news companies fool them into believing that the war in Iraq was a righteous deed. For example, from the data collected at the beginning of the war one can see that eighty percent of the Fox News viewers believed that the weapons of mass destruction were in Iraq, yet this statement has been disapproved, unfortunately without much media attention. The news companies do not have courage to declare that they have misinformed the public in order to prevent the public discontent with the government.
