In early United States history, slavery was a debated issue because of the absence of written law on the subject. ... When writing the constitution the framers had many strong feelings about anti-slavery but they were not a product of the constitution despite many freedoms reserved in the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. ... The framers did include a clause called the Enumeration Clause which states that each state is given representatives based on its population and in the population of slaves it was called “other persons” are counted as three-fifths of a whole person. ... The framers were criticized as treated slaves as property, but a careful explanation of this clause will prove the opposite.
