to kill a mocking bird
In the novel, To Kill A Mockingbird, we encounter the main character and narrator, Jean Louise Finch, or Scout, as she is known. Scout lacks femininity and is therefore labeled a “tomboy”. A “tomboy” shall be defined as a girl who behaves like a boisterous boy (New World Dictionary, p.1496). This is evident in Scout’s choice of clothing, her actions, and by what the other characters say about her. Scout’s selection of clothing suggests that she is a tomboy. An example of this occurs on page 136 when she says, “ I felt the starch walls of a pink cotton penitentiary closing in on me”. When Scout makes this statement, she is expressing negative feelings towards a feminine item.
