Ulee's Gold

Victor Nunez’s Ulee’s Gold is a story about a beekeeper named Ulysses Jackson who struggles to bring his fallen family back together again. Wanting nothing more than a quiet life taking care of his bees, Ulee, the protagonist in the film is faced with numerous family issues that only he can mend. His son is in jail, while his daughter–in-law has run away and been missing for two years. Ulee is now responsible for raising his two granddaughters, Casey who is a rebellious teenager, and Penny who is too young to understand her family’s circumstances, and desires her mothers love. In the scene following Ulee and Penny’s trip to the bee farm, we see how the family has changed throughout the course of the film. Helen, Ulee’s daughter-in-law is now at home recovering from drug addiction. The sequence analyzed uses various narrative techniques, mise en scene, cinematography, and editing to show how the characters have evolved and the family is gradually learning to heal and rebuild. The first shot of the scene begins with Casey talking on the telephone in the kitchen. She has just told her boyfriend Marky that she can’t go out with him that evening. The fact that Casey has turned down her invite shows how she is beginning to put her family first and she is losing her sense of selfishness which was very evident in earlier scenes. This shot is filmed through the doorway, to signify the emotional distance of Casey’s character. A medium shot with a normal lens, at eye level height is used to show Casey’s body language and to show her clothing. She is dressed in plain casual clothes, blue jeans, a blue shirt and her hair is pulled back. Her clothing in this scene is dramatically different and more conservative from previous scenes where she is wearing short skirts and heavy make-up. Her change of clothes illustrates how she has lost her rebellious side due to the fact that she has had to take care of her mother and take on a more responsible role.
