“A Modest Proposal”(Response) In 1729 Jonathan Swift wrote and published an essay call “A Modest Proposal.” He talked about the poverty in Dublin, Ireland and concocted a solution in order to solve the problem. In the 1720’s 90% of Ireland was filled with beggars and thieves. Many of these people use to work on farms of noble landowners but they were thrown off when they couldn’t pay the rent. These families would have 5 or 6 children to help farm the land when they became old enough. When the family was thrown off the land and onto the streets, their children wouldn’t be able to find work until they were 9 or 10. As a result of these circumstances, they were forced to live off their parents. This was an obstacle for the parents because they didn’t have the money to support themselves in the first place.
