Hard Times Charles Dickens Coursework Assignment
Hard Times by Charles Dickens was a story written about how time was when he was alive. Times were tough for children, especially Tom Gradgrind and Louisa Grandgrind, if they ever questioned their upbringing or the education, their life would become hard and made to be a struggle.
Thomas Gradgrind was a man built on hard facts and nothing but non-fiction, he felt these things were indispensable in life. ... As soon as his children were old enough to eat, he was feeding them hard facts and if anything wasn’t a fact then it wasn’t true. ... He and Louisa were taught never to believe fancy but as they peeked into the circus one night they were intrigued as to what they saw, how life had more to it than just hard facts, there was more and Tom wanted to find out about this. ... When she and Tom were caught at the circus it was Tom who was scolded not Louisa, although Tom was the younger and it was Louisa who took Tom to the circus not Tom who took Louisa, Tom was the one told off as men and boys alike were not to acquire orders off women and girls, men were the superior sex and women took orders off men, so Mr Gradgrind found it hard to believe that Louisa took Tom to the circus.
