I’ve decided that my success speech today will be about how I quit smoking, and the benefits to my health from doing so. Everyone has come to recognize nowadays that smoking cigarettes can cause cancer and other breathing problems, but only people who have smoked before can understand how terribly addictive they can also be. ... Thankfully I was only a smoker for about 6 years but during that time I must have attempted quitting dozens of times.
I smoked my first cigarette when I was 15 at a friend’s house who had stolen a pack from his parents. This friend was also the one who showed me how to smoke properly and after a few drags I could feel the blood rushing to my head giving me a nicotine high. I enjoyed how it made me feel and I wondered why I hadn’t tried them before. I had heard about the addictive qualities of cigarettes but like most new smokers, I felt that as though they had no power over me and I would be able to quit when I wanted to.
It wasn’t until after I had smoked about 10 packs that I realized I was craving nicotine at different times throughout the day and since I was still attending school I found my attention span was much shorter since I was thinking about when I would get a chance to smoke.
