Media Journal Summary The Importance of Being Oprah- On the topic of television talk shows, you can find the same underlining themes. In shows like Ricky or Sally the hosts has guests that have some problem like their have no father or their kids is a bad kid and need boot camp. Depending on what is the problem is of the guest, the audience can turn in to encouragers or an angry mob. For example, on Sally there were young children that dress like sluts and have sex all the time. The audience booed, laughed, and ridiculed the children for how they dressed. But when the parents came out the audience gave comments on advice and comfort. The host is just the ring leader of the show and tries to get reactions that would make good television so their show stays on. This whole format turns into the topic of the next story “Confessions of a Talk TV Show Shrink. Confessions of a Talk TV Show Shrink- Fischoff’s mind changed about TV talk shows because every time he went to different shows to teach people about serious personal and social problems, he ended up just saying what the audience wanted him to talk about. He did not noticed this when he was in the show but after he got home and watched the show on TV, he noticed that he caved into the host and audience and just said the same old thing about the guest instead of help them to solve their problem. As for the guest, I guess people some times going for actual help and then other times just go to be on TV. For the people that go for help, they some times can find it but normal are just given some sugar coated answer that makes for good TV. Finally, for the people that go just to be on TV, their goal is served and nothing else. Tales from the Cutting-Room Floor- With this topic of true behind shows like Cops, I believe the shows are not that real.
