the power and the glory
BOOK REVEIW Graham Greene’s novel ‘ The Power and The Glory ‘ is a picaresque narrative in which the central character experiences two different types of journey, one, which is geographical, and the other spiritual. The man in question is ` The Whiskey Priest’, a once well-to-do catholic priest now running from the authorities in an area of Mexico that has repudiated Catholicism and condemned its priest to death. But it is not just the authorises, the priest is running from, it is his growing despair, his never-ending struggle against the joint temptations of drink and his sense of unworthiness. He also battles with his religious doubts. Greene’s complex and compelling treatment of the Priest’s faith makes his book remarkable.
