Youth culture is largely influenced by adults in the media who make decisions on issues which surround youth such as music, fashion, technology and films, which is then taken on and developed by the younger generations. ... In my essay I will be discussing the similarities and differences in youth culture between the time in which the two films were made and the media devices that were used. Media devices are used effectively in both ‘clueless’ and ‘pretty in pink’ to demonstrate all the factors of youth culture, despite the films being made in two different decades. ‘Pretty in pink’ being made in 1986 and ‘clueless’ in1995. ... This is evidently clear even though it wasn’t as strong in ‘clueless’. Also in ‘clueless’ Cher’s best friend Dion is introduced who is black, which suggests a better acceptance of different races and cultures at this time. ... For example when Duckie enters in ‘pretty in pink’, the music suddenly changes, and the camera angle is low and pointing at his feet. ... The music in the opening sequences of ‘Pretty in pink’ is the song pretty in pink which starts before the film and carries on as the film starts. In the opening of the film there are significant objects and settings (clothes, make-up, back ground objects) which are pink and are snapshots of the girl, Andy, getting dressed etc, which is themed around the title and which ties in with the ending. ... In ‘clueless’ the opening sequence is alike in that the music starts before the film which is ‘kids in America’ which was quite new, and well fitted to the modern film being lively and energetic. ... She is wearing yellow, and there are things in the background with yellow on them which represents sunshine California and also adds to the effect of Cher being blonde and how it is often associated with being dumb, and as the title suggests, clueless.
