Conformity is a big part of many people’s lives, almost everything that we do on a daily basis is conforming to rules or ideas created by society. “Conformity is defined (by society) as an action in agreement with prevailing forms and customs.” (www.webster.com). We all live in a conformist society. Everywhere across the world there is conformity and no way to entirely escape it. Warren Schmidt’s whole life is one conformity after another and he realizes that and he now wants to break the cycle. Today in the world conformity comes in many forms. From magazines to television, radio, and ads, and billboards, conformity is everywhere we look. Everywhere we look, we see some type of advertising, even on clothing. The kids see what is advertised on television like a type of clothing, maybe that a popular music artist is wearing, now the kids have to have it and if they don’t they aren’t cool. All of the different types of media could possibly have negative effects on today's youth because of a child sees a celebrity wear a certain type of clothing, they have to have it also, and then it becomes what’s "cool" and what’s "not”, which to them is determined mostly from their favorite celebrities on the television, and when it comes to education it is not much different. Consider, for example, a typical essay in a college class, as this essay. The teacher gives the students the topic in class and the students write on it. To do really well, the students believe that they need to figure out what will please the teacher. Students do not even think about writing about topics that are not assigned. The effect that the media has on the youth of today is that of "I want to and have to be like what is on the television”.
