Ignorance is Bliss When God created man he bestowed upon him the gift of innocence. God’s creation lived in what can be referred to as an illusion as he did not see the truth of his actions and environment. The Truman Show can be considered a replication of this small time in history as in the movie Truman does not know the reality of his actions or his surroundings. He was an actor who was put in his position without a choice. However to some this may seem cruel, on many accounts the idea of ignorance being desired beyond truth is expressed. In the Greek work Oedipus the King Oedipus lives as a king well respected by his people, loved by his wife, but more importantly ignorant of the truth. It was not until he acquired this truth that his body was filled with hatred for himself and for the world he sinned in. On another account we follow a man who is released from his life of illusion, and is fed reality long enough to grow accustomed to the truth, and then we see him return to his previous dwelling where his former associates still remained blindfolded by illusion. It was Plato’s The Allegory of the Cave in which these events were documented. By the end of the enlightened mans journey however we see that he is no longer welcomed nor accommodated in past dwelling full of illusions which were easier to live by and contained no evil as did the life he would soon discover in his latter environment above ground.
