After conducting a research project examining the prevalence of dissociative identity disorder (DID) worldwide, I have discovered that the prevalence of DID varies considerably across cultures. ... In fact, two researchers, Goff and Simms, say that DID is a “culturally determined disorder that occurs in highly suggestible patients” (175). ... This suggests that a) psychologists who favor the disorder have the power to create the disorder within the patient; b) that psychologists who favor the disorder may over-diagnose; or c) that psychologists who do not favor the disorder under-diagnose. ...
In conclusion, there are many factors that could account for the unequal representation of dissociative identity disorder.
