Salvador Dali crated many wonderful and amazing paintings throughout his lifetime, due to the inspiration and deification of the theories of Sigmund Freud and of Freud himself. Dali’s idolization of Freud led to the fruition of many ideas and themes in Dali’s mind but, it also lad to stressed relations with fellow painters that also began to show up as themes in Dali’s work. From Dali’s relations with other painters, and his own thoughts the reader can see the extent of Dali’s idolization of Freud. In the earlier months of 1931, the French chapter of Surrealists painters and become irritated and tired of Dali’s continued idolization of Freud. The leader of the Surrealists, Andre Breton, was especially angry because he thought that Dali was moving away from the goals and ideas of Surrealism. From the other Surrealists’ reactions, the reader can see that Dali’s idolization of Freud was so great that it alienated his colleagues. Is can be inferred that this idolization was the framework behind a lot of Dali’s artwork. Also, the continued idolization of Freud showed a hidden idea in Dali’s mind. Dali considered no one his equal in intelligence and in the discussion of paranoia, except for Freud. Since Dali considered Freud his only equal this would mean that Dali held Freud and his ideas in the highest regard when it came to his artwork. Because Dali idolized Freud to such a great extent, that it would be a dream come true if he was able to meet Freud. In July of 1938, Dali was introduced to Freud by Stefan Zweig. This was a defining moment for Dali because he was finally able to meet his idol. Both men impressed each other, but Dali was able to change Freud’s view on Surrealism. Finally being able to meet Freud left an imprint on Dali. This visit significantly affected Dali and his artwork for times to come. Dali’s idolization of Freud gives the reader a new perspective on Dali, but Dali didn’t just idolize Freud and his work, he believed it very deeply and he lived in the ideas.
Sigmund Freud developed many ideas and theories that Salvador Dali believed in and followed in his everyday life. ... This belief was also believed by Dali, and it is a recurring theme in his artwork. This idea also influenced Dali’s development of the paranoiac-critical method. ... Dali greatly believed in the principles of psychoanalysis, and he incorporated those beliefs into his artwork. ... This period that Freud talks of is very important especially important to the development of the person that Dali came to be. The Salvador Dali that we know was not the first Salvador Dali, he was the second. Dali had and older brother that died nine months before the second Dali was born. Dali’s parents named their second son Salvador Dali because of the grief they felt for their lost son. This always bothered Dali, because he always felt that he was just a replacement for his dead brother. This fear would influence and appear in Dali’s artwork, due to this fear haunting Dali for the rest of his life. ... The pleasure and reality principles played a large role in the artwork of Dali because sexual desire and fantasies, and the postponement of those desires were major themes in a lot of Dali’s art. ... Sublimation most definitely applied to Dali, because for much of Dali’s life, he was a sexually frustrated person and virgin. Dali took the wasted energy of his sexual desires and applied it to his art. ... From these different beliefs, the reader can see that Dali believed in many of Freud’s beliefs, but believing is one thing, living in the beliefs is another.
