“On Seeing The Elgin Marbles” In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, a group of poets, known now as the romantics made a decisive break from the neoclassical tradition that was prevalent in poetry at that time. The romantic poets felt constrained by the strict form of poetry and artistic expression at that time and sought after a greater freedom in their work. Art became more individualistic during this period, and consequently, it became characteristic for the individual’s experience to become the center of the work, with a greater focus on their emotional and imaginative manifestation. One of the most notable and important romantic poets during this period was John Keats.
