The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison

Bishop, John "Morrison's The Bluest Eye" Explicator 51.4 (Summer1993): 252 (4pp). Ebscohost Academic Search Elite, 2004. Article No. 9311187624. Bishop focuses on the name of Pecola Breedlove and the naming convention of the women within the text. He points out the Pecola was the name of a pretty mulatto girl who hated her mother because she was black and ugly in a movie called The Imitation of Life. He shows that all of the women within the text admired women in Hollywood and viewed them as symbols and measurements cf beauty. Pecola’s mother may have named her daughter after the mulatto girl in the movie because that is what she may have wanted her daugher to look like because they viewed black as ugly and mulatto as pretty.
