The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World Some of the most fascinating, advanced architecture this world has seen since the beginning of written history, occurred not in modern times, but within the ancient world, specifically in close proximity to the Mediterranean Sea. Of the vast number of architectural wonders of the ancient world that existed throughout civilizations, six of the seven most prominent have been generally accepted as historically recognized wonders of the ancient world by the scholarly community today based on the recognition attributed by the ancient historian Herodotus. The six generally accepted wonders of the world include the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, the Statue of Zeus, the Temple of Artemis, the Colossus of Rhodes, the Lighthouse of Alexandria, and the Great Pyramids of Giza. The seventh wonder of the world has been widely debated and may or may not include the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, Turkey; the Throne Hall of Persepolis, Iran; the rock carved city of Petra, Jordan or the Parthenon of Athens, Greece in which historian Howard Spodek describes as “a temple dedicated to the Goddess Athena, the city’s patron-deity.
