DISCRIMINATION AGAINST SMOKERS Every year, each approaching week, and in the days to come, stricter non-smoking laws are being formed, voted on, and approved. Smoking of tobacco has become a major issue in the public today. It has been proven to cause lung cancer as well as other life threatening diseases, and is quickly being banned in most public places around the country. Second-hand smoking is also a big issue for these bans. Studies have shown that a waiter/tress, who works an eight-hour shift in a smoking environment, is equal to smoking half of a pack of cigarettes. Imagine doing that everyday. That is unfair to the employee’s health, and could force them to leave a job that they enjoy. Already in Maine, Delaware, Texas, Chicago, and Boston motions have been passed to ban smoking in all restaurants and bars. People from all of these cities have come out to protest these proposals, claiming their American right to smoke where they want. What they fail to see is that they are endangering people’s, who don’t smoke, health.
