The Dachshund is believed to have existed for as much as 4000 years. Ancient Egypt produced an illustration of a dog on the monument of Thutmose III around 1468 BC. It is believed that later, this breed of canines descended from the Burgundian hounds that were brought to Austria. Long bodied and low dogs appeared throughout the 1500s and 1600s. They were used to hung underground, pursuing small game such as rodents and badgers. Nowadays, these short-legged dogs are popular for show, and family companions, as well as for their oringinal purpose, which is to aid their owners during the sport of hunting. There are three differing coats and two sizes of Dachshunds. There is the standard size and there is the miniature size. Standard Dachsunds grow from 16 to 32 pounds. Miniatures grow to about eleven pounds. Each of the types can have a smooth, longhaired, or wired coat. Owning a Dachshund is quite an experience. This breed is a fiery one, but also quite loyal. They are practically shadows and are constantly underfoot. They are hounds, and therefore, very influenced by their noses and highly acute sense of smell.
