YORUBA CREATION MYTH

... ”

As illustrated in “Myths Of Creation” by Phillip Freund there are five different ways that man has explained the creation of Earth. Usually a specific myth will follow the pattern of a certain creation category, sometimes this myth will even show hints of another category as well. The Yokut, an American-Indian tribe, use a myth of creation that is similar to the flood explanation Freund entitles “THE WATERY BIRTH”(Freund 41). The Yokut use their myth to honor both their culture and natural surroundings. The Yokut also place a value on certain morals and ethics illustrated in their creation story. ...
The Yokut use much symbolism in their creation story. ... The Eagle’s intelligent idea led to the creation of the new world. ... In the end it was the Eagle’s half of the stump which prevailed during the creation of the new Earth. ...
The Yokut’s creation myth represents an answer to Earth’s beginning, a representation of how one should live one’s life, and a honor paid to sacred objects. ... The eagle is seen as the most powerful bird therefore it is used to represent the honor and creation of Earth. ... The creation myth also shows some historical facts such as the flood which exists in the very beginning of the story. The creation myth slightly touches upon other categories of creation, such as “Creation from Clay”, which is present in such creation stories as Genesis. The creation myth of each culture usually represents the people and their surroundings.
